Determining Your Purpose

Have you ever asked yourself at some point in your life or at various points in your life or that of your business the following question...?
"What's my purpose?"
I am guessing that if you are reading this, you have. And, because you just read the question, you are asking yourself (perhaps again or perhaps for the first time) that question.
It is a very important question. To me, it is the most important question you can ask yourself. Once you seriously ask yourself that question, it will not let you go. It has a habit of nagging at you until you give it your full attention to find out the answer.
Regrettably, people and organizations across the globe are living and leading purposeless lives - rightly or wrongly. For many of them they are afraid to ask the question because, if they did, they would have to face up to their responsibility for where they are and what is happening or not happening in their lives and even their organizations. They prefer to live and work in selective ignorance. They have no desire to grow. But know this...what not growing is dying.
For me, this is where leadership starts. It starts with self-leadership. Only by addressing this question and determining its answer will your life and, therefore, your career be as fulfilling as it is meant to be.
I posed my own variant of that question on LinkedIn last year...
Please, let me explain.
The purpose behind the question is to confront people (and even teams and organization because it can applied there too); to give them a thought-provoking question to help them get clearer direction for their careers, their lives and their own Journeys of Success so that they ultimately add more value and find more fulfillment.
Everyone on this planet is here for a purpose - their purpose. The one for which they are divinely designed. My personal conviction and belief is that everyone is world-class at something (their purpose). There is something for which you are the only person on the planet with the right mix of attributes, strengths, passions and experience who can deliver and fulfill it. Regrettably, many never discover it. Why? Because they do not ask the question.
In one word, what's your purpose?
The response was quite significant. It generated more than 3995 replies. Why so many? To coin a phrase, "The teacher comes when the student is ready". This question is a great teacher. Based on the feedback and comments in the discussion many said how timely the question was for where they were in their lives and careers. Considering the global financial crisis we are just coming out of that is, perhaps, not that surprising.
Now you may be asking, "Why, one word?" Good question. My answer? As a coach, I like to distill things down to their simplest and purest form for me first and, then for my clients. A confused mind says, "No!" You cannot get confused when you only have one word with which to deal. Of course, that assumes you know you have the right one word.
That one-word-purpose will be a reference point for your life - personal or business. It is for mine. My one-word purpose is: transformation. All that I am and do is about transforming people and organizations so they are more on purpose and working and living to their potential. So, whenever I am facing a challenge, an opportunity and/or a decision I can ask the question:
"Does this align or resonate with my purpose?"
If the answer is "Yes", I keep going. If the answer is "No", I don't.Your purpose is like a compass and is meant to be used as one to keep you heading in the right direction. It applies across all your roles in your life e.g. mother, wife, daughter, volunteer, business owner. Applying your purpose in such a way ensures you are being who you are meant to be and doing what you are meant to be doing. The result...you will achieve what you are meant to achieve.
The key is that once we know our purpose we are to keep it in front of us at all times. Do that and life will be more fulfilling! Do that and you will connect with others living their purpose. Do that and you become a force for good; a force for change.
Please understand the inherent import of knowing and living your purpose. Think beyond yourself. Living your purpose will help others live theirs. All purposes are interdependent.
Imagine. If everyone in your home, school, business, town, city, region or nation discovered and lived their purpose, what would be the impact and value to the world...especially considering the events of today?
I believe most of, if not, all the adverse issues of humanity would be addressed and overcome.
Mankind would truly become enlightened.
That should get you thinking.
Before proceeding with the rest of this article and due to the importance of this critical question, whether you are an individual, team or organization, just ask yourself, mull over and meditate upon this life-changing question:
In one word, what's my purpose?
So...Where has your thinking got to?
As mentioned above, there are those people who are too afraid to ask the question. They are afraid that the answer may explain why their lives or their businesses are perhaps unfulfilling. That means they would have to assume responsibility for where they are at rather than using the escape of blaming everyone else for their situation and their sense of frustration or dissatisfaction. For them to confront themselves would mean they would have to change. And the fear of change is what holds many people and organizations back from their true self and their true purpose.
Just so you know. It took me 42 years to discover my purpose. Why so long? I never really confronted myself with the question. When I did, the answer slowly revealed itself.
As you read this you will be in one of three camps:
1. You already know your purpose. Congratulations! Now the mantle of responsibility is on you to live your purpose more fully and, thereby, help others to live theirs.
2. You have a good idea as to what is your purpose but do not yet feel you really have it clear. Well done! Keep it foremost in mind and begin to use it as the compass it is meant to be that will lead you to a more fulfilling career and more fulfilling life. With that focus its purity will be distilled.
3. You do not yet know your purpose.
For those of you in camps #2 and 3 we will continue this exploration and provide you with some guidance on how you can approach answering this life-changing question. Consider the following approaches to help you define your purpose. Please remember that these can be applied to an individual, team or organization.
1. Be 3. Three year old toddlers are perhaps the smartest people on the planet. They are incessant in getting to the root of an answer. Any parent out there will know this. My daughter last year kept asking the question "Why?" She wanted to know the answer. And she kept asking that question until she was satisfied (and my wife and I were exhausted) she had the answer she was seeking. And you should keep asking it too. It is an immensely significant and powerful question.
For example, start by asking yourself, "Why do I do what I do"?...Now ask yourself, "Why that is that important to me? And then on that answer ask the same question, "And why is that important to me?" And keep going until you can go no further. At that point you have come very close to the core answer to your question - your purpose.
2. Identify those areas in your life that provide you with the most stimulation, energy, and excitement. What are you passionate about? Your passion and purpose are closely linked. Sometimes it is easier to seek your passions first and your purpose will be born from there.
Where do you get a consistent buzz? What are you doing and who are you being when that happens?
Ask yourself, "Where in my life, across all my roles, do I feel like I am in the zone? Where do things flow?" Your answer will give you a clue that you are aligning to your purpose.
3. Consider your strengths. What are they? Your gifts? Where have you been able to exercise those fully? Where have you used those to serve others? Answering these will help identify a location, a field and/or a focus for your life. In that lies your purpose.
4. Ask friends, family, and colleagues what they believe or discern is your purpose. Make sure to ask only of those whom you know and trust and who know you well and who will be honest with their feedback. What you are looking for is a common thread in their answers.
5. Another approach is to finish off this phrase, "My purpose is to bring...".
One or all of five of these should help. Once you have identified your purpose, make the effort to determine the one word that sums it all up for you.
A question I often get asked at this point is, "Won't it be possible that someone else will have the same word and the same purpose?"
My answer is "Yes. Absolutely." However, your approach to it, your context and your impact will be unique. Why? Because you are unique! Someone in Canada may have the exact same purpose but you are in India. Enough said. This allows you to be authentic. Being authentic means your body, mind and soul will be in harmony. When that happens your whole being is "singing".
If you are not "singing" and feel discordant with your work and/or your life it is likely you are not in alignment with your purpose. When there is discord stop. Review what is going on and determine what needs to change about you and your circumstances.
When you are not authentic you likely experience frustration. I did. Several times. As a result I have changed my career from veterinarian to army officer to post-grad student to trainer to consultant to award-winning coach and now also speaker and author. All the while I was moving toward my purpose, whether I was aware of it or not. For you and me, energy spent anywhere else other than your purpose is often wasted. Where you feel drained by bad habits and attitudes, wrong relationships, lesser priorities and those other things that actually distract you, these are keeping you from your purpose. Deal with them.
Everyone is entitled to their own purpose because it is theirs alone. When you know it "fits" for you it is right. Do not allow others to dissuade you.
Remember most of us have "crabs" in our lives or business.
What do I mean by that? Put a single crab in a bucket with no lid and it will try and get out. Put another crab in the bucket what will happen is that when one tries to get out the other will pull it back. The "crabs" are those people who will seek to pull you back into the bucket with them; they are comfortable where they are and your purpose and aspirations will make them uncomfortable and challenge them. They generally think they need to pull you back. Why? Because it makes them feel better about themselves. It is really about them. Not about you. As I have done, identify your "crabs" and manage those relationships to minimise the drag effect they may have on you living your purpose fully. (Note in business these "crabs" could be clients, colleagues, leaders, suppliers and other stakeholders.)
We are designed to serve one another not feed off one another. We all need others to truly achieve / live our purposes. That can be perceived on of two ways. First, some may take the approach to use others. This is a very self-centred approach. You may achieve your purpose but it will likely be more difficult and less fulfilling. Second, serve others. This is a humble and more selfless approach by which you will likely achieve your purpose more easily with more fulfillment.
No one purpose is greater than another. There is just your purpose. That is the one that is most important. Once you know it, examine all areas of your life and ascertain if each area is keeping you on purpose. Where an area is not, decide when it is reasonable to withdraw or change and/or decide where you need to move next to keep you on purpose.
Live your purpose. Love your purpose. Live your dream.
Remember. Our purposes are interdependent. Every person's or organization's purpose serves others. Without others, we cannot truly fulfill our purposes. When we serve one another we truly become free.
Who knows? Perhaps, by sharing your purpose, other readers or even I can help further yours or that of your organization and vice versa? Now that would be interesting!

Questions and Affirmations - The Art (and Science) Of Talking To Yourself

I Hear Voices...
This is not a statement of paranormal; it is a statement of truth. Yes, we all have an inner voice...Is yours an ally or an enemy? Do you realize you say things to yourself you would never let anyone else say to you? Don't let your inner voice tear you down and strip away your confidence.
All outward success first starts with inward success...learn the secret strategies to winning communication with your self.

"Men ought to know that from the brain and from the brain only, arise our pleasures, joys, laughter and sorrows. ...Through it, we think, see, hear and distinguish the ugly from the beautiful, the bad from the good, the pleasant from the unpleasant...To consciousness, the brain is messenger." -Hippocrates

Did you know that each day you have more than 50,000 random thoughts flying around in your head? You might find it interesting to note that we all have voices in our head. Sometimes the voice is calm and reassuring providing you with great confidence in your abilities. Other times, this voice is the negative and self limiting voice that calls into question all of your deficiencies. The voice that brings up all of the past failures and shortcomings and reminds you of all of the things you have going against you.
In sports, this voice is the last thing you hear before you take action. In interaction with others, it is sometimes the voice that challenges your worth in relation to others and weakens our own esteem.
Although we are born with this amazing supercomputer, the most complex and incredible instrument known in the universe, it does not come with an owner's manual.

Success principles are not secrets; they are hiding in plain view.
________________________________________
Famed journalist, Edward R. Murrow remarked, "The obscure we eventually see. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer." They are not reserved for the rich or famous, but to everyone who will apply them. We are inborn by our creator with tools to guide us and protect us and to open the world of abundance to us; if only we will let it.
Like understanding the law of gravity will place you on your bottom if you violate it, principles of success are laws of nature. Every idea you produce consciously produces subconscious activity to fulfill what was first created in your mind.
A farmer choosing what to plant in a field is like the conscious mind. The field itself is the subconscious mind. Whatever the farmer plants, the field grows. The field does not possess a will of its own; it must grow what was planted. It would be ridiculous to think of the farmer planting corn and having beans grow. In the same way your subconscious mind will carry out the actions our conscious mind directs. If the farmer neglects the field and plants nothing, there will still be growth. The growth will be wild and weedy based on whatever was accidentally planted.
Over time the field will be out of control with weeds. In the same way our minds, if not consciously directed, will fill with mental weeds.
There is good news!
The good news is that just like any other skill, you can learn to take greater control of your inner voice and in doing so, create greater control of your life.
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind." -William James

Create Your Destiny
with the
Power Of
Questions and Affirmations
________________________________________
The Power of Positive Questions
Most people ask themselves the wrong question which produces a negative subconscious effect. You can learn to program your super computer brain by learning to ask yourself the right questions. The key is to ask yourself solution-based, positive and empowering questions rather than negative, disempowered, problematic questions.
In the past, you may have asked questions like the following. "Why am I so fat?" "Why is my life such a failure?" "Why do bad things always happen to me?" "Why am I so stupid?" These questions and all the ones like it take a terrible toll on you.
First they start with a negative assumption, stated as fact with the question supporting the wrong conclusion. If you ask yourself, "Why is my life in the crapper?" any answer you give provides support to the negative assumption. This can be compared to an attorney taking a witness from the opposing side down the path to prove the lawyer's point.
Next time you find yourself doing this, interrupt yourself with the quip, "Objection your Honor; leading the witness!"
Improving your condition comes through asking yourself better questions. This allows the creative inspiration to work through our subconscious to bring about the conditions or magnetize the conditions we seek.
You not only have the ability, but also all the resources necessary to learn anything you need to learn to fulfill any ambition or achieve any goal you desire. The goal for your questions to yourself in any situation should be outcome or solution based. The assumption is that there is an issue that needs to be fixed. Rather than what was presented above, look at an approach leading to an action conclusion. "What do I need to change about my habits to get to my fitness goal?" "What do I want to do with my life that gives me meaning and satisfaction?" "What do I need to do differently to change this string of results?" "What can I learn and apply from this?" "What is affecting my mood that makes me feel my life is not going the right direction?"
Tony Robbins asserts, "Questions provide the key to unlocking our unlimited potential." Probably the single best question you can begin to ask yourself in any situation is, "What outcome do I want from this event/situation?"
You may certainly wish to adapt this slightly, but when you go into a situation, whether it is a business meeting or negotiation or class, knowing your desired outcome is vital. As I began to work on this habit in earnest for myself, I was simply amazed at how many actions I took and how many activities I worked on without asking this clearly up front? I need to research a better mortgage for my house. What is my ideal outcome? Is it lower payments, less interest over time, more house for my money, flexibility? Without knowing the right question, the answers don't help much. What outcome do I desire for my relationship with my spouse and children? Do I know and plan or just let it happen?
We have the power through understanding and training of our subconscious minds to plant the seeds and affirm health, security, happiness, abundance. We also have the opportunity to allow society's programming to plant the seeds of lack, insecurity, fear, doubt, and negativity. I am not speaking about deep hypnosis or anything out of the ordinary.
It takes practice to keep your mind free from worry and insecurity. It takes dedication to constantly feed your mind new information and positive stimuli that will provide positive associations. It takes vigilance to associate with positive people and positive influences. Make sure your questions ask for what you want, not what you don't want.
Remember...your mind is a supercomputer. In addition to the information and educational programming you provide as input to your computer, how you talk to yourself and the questions you ask is the most influential factor in your outcome.
The Simple Power of Affirmations
We need to find a way to control our thoughts to keep them as allies rather than adversaries. In her book, The Secret Door To Success, the late Florence Scovel Shinn talks about having a Watchman at the gate of our thoughts. Her assertion is that we have the power to choose our thoughts. She uses an analogy of a single sheep dog controlling frightened sheep into the pen through gentle determination.
"We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation."
Although her book was written in the early 1900s, she hits upon a tool that is one of the best and yet underutilized tool for controlling and programming your thoughts, the power of affirmation.
Affirmation as a mental programming technique is an extremely powerful tool, yet one that is scoffed at by many. Affirmations are tremendously misunderstood and very much underutilized. What you may not realize is that you use them all the time although most time not to your benefit. Affirmations are simply statements of intent. You can develop into all that you desire to be based on what you chose to affirm about yourself.
I Am The Greatest!!
Mohammad Ali is one of the most widely known and recognized sports figures as a former heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Ali is famous for his repeating of an affirmation he used with great effectiveness to convince not only himself, but also his opponents and the rest of the world. "I am the Greatest!" Mohammad Ali's affirmation created his legacy.
Like goals, affirmations work best when they are worded in the present tense as "I am" or "I achieve" type statements. The mind cannot hold a negative. Affirmations are nothing more than affirming the truth as you wish it to be to instruct your subconscious mind to take action in that direction. It is really very simple.
Affirmations help you believe in your dreams and what you wish to be. Belief is essential to convincing your subconscious to act the direction you want to go. Affirmations are like exercise. You will not see immediate results until you create the habit which over time helps you build strength in yourself and in your beliefs. This ultimately affects your actions which affect your results.
An affirmation in some cases might be a lie at present, but you are in a sense trying to convince your subconscious that it can be true to make it a reality in the future.
________________________________________
"To affirm anything is to state that it is so, and to maintain this as being true in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Repeating an affirmation is leading the mind to that state of consciousness where it accepts that which it wishes to believe."-Ernest Holmes
________________________________________
Sometimes we inadvertently affirm and reinforce old established beliefs. "I am so stupid." "I'm going to lose this account." "I always flub this shot." "There is no way I can make this deadline." "I gain weight just smelling chocolate." "I need a drink." "I am a horrible golfer." I can't speak in public." "I could never write a book." "I am such a klutz." "I never win." "I'm not smart enough to do that." "I could never do something like that." "I am such an idiot sometimes." "I would lose my head if it were not attached."
Have you ever said things like this to yourself; or worse to others about yourself? Of course you have...we all have done this. This kind of talk while sometimes self effacing and done for positive effect, can actually have negative consequences. If taken to extreme and developed into a habit or pattern of self talk, the message and programming can be damaging. The issue that separates people is their underlying attitudes and beliefs about themselves. How do you respond to setbacks and adversity? Do you take it in stride, or do you take the glum and negative approach of "this always happens to me, I never catch a break, etc."
The other choice is to create and affirm and reinforce our desired positive beliefs. This happens all day long, moment by moment, and takes hold a little at a time. "This is easy." "I only eat when I am hungry." "I feel great when I exercise." "I know I can drop the pounds when I put my mind to it." "What an awesome day!" "I don't run and hide from problems, I attack." "I feel great!" "My life is really working." "I see a lot of opportunities in this situation."
I have one friend who repeats to herself daily an affirmation of, "I feel healthy, I feel happy, I feel terrific!" Every time I see this person, I can tell it is real, applied and working in her life. Another friend of mine, when asked how she is, replies glumly sounding like the always depressed Eyore from Winnie The Pooh, "I'm here."
You make the call which one is progressing faster in their lives. Can you guess which one has more abundant opportunities "luckily" come her way?
The Art (and Science) of Affirmations
When you learn to change and direct your thoughts and your internal communication your life will reflect the change (law of correspondence). Creating affirmations can change your beliefs and change the course of your life. For affirmations and autosuggestion to be effective it needs to have the following six elements. In order to be effective, your positive declarations should embody most or all of the following characteristics:
  1. Personal (Usually a statement beginning with I)
  2. Positive (The mind cannot hold a picture of a negative)
  3. Present Tense (The time is now)
  4. Short (Easy to remember and easy apply)
  5. Specific (A specific target allows for a specific course of action and most direct route)
  6. Emotionally Intense (This is necessary to break through the clutter of the thousands of thoughts and images that you are bombarded with on a daily basis)
The real goal is to imbed this into the subconscious to allow it to do the yeoman's work. The only real obstacle is convincing your subconscious that you are serious and committed and that you truly have a burning desire for what you want. Long-term change will only happen when there is congruency between who you think you are and how you act and behave and the choices that we make.
Affirmations are Catalyst for Success
Positive affirmations mixed with emotional intensity produce amazing results. Music is an amazing mood catalyst. To really get the most out of affirmations and create an incredible Incremental Advantage in their effectiveness in your life, I suggest recording your affirmations to inspiring music.
A good friend of mine challenged me to do just this ten years ago. I purchased an inexpensive karaoke machine, put an upbeat instrumental tape in and recorded all of the affirmations I could create to change behaviors and support my goals.
Unless you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and give this a real opportunity to work in your life, you could never know the simply incredible power and way that this mental programming technique can work in your life. I literally wore my first tape out listening to it, but it created significant leverage and results for me. I know the vast majority reading this will not make the commitment to this habit. It is a shame, but for those of you who do, I promise your results in every area of your life will improve as your internal communication improves. I constantly look for, borrow, adapt and write down affirmations. I cannot claim originality for all of them as they have been collected and changed over the years.
  • I turn challenges into opportunities.
  • I eliminate debt as dead weight and a YOKE around my neck. I will only be as free as I am free from debt.
  • I am a leader and a developer of people!
  • I am calm and composed under pressure.
  • Stress makes me stonger.
  • I utilize my strengths and abilities to benefit everyone I come into contact with.
  • I actively pursue excellence in myself and others.
  • I get up at 5:00 every morning feeling energized and ready to take on the day.
  • I face my fears and conquer them.
  • I am empowered by the energy that I feel and that flows through me.
  • My daily routines are positive and improving.
  • I always increase my value to other people.
  • I am flexible and adaptable in every situation. I look for creative alternatives and seek out new ways of accomplishing my goals.
  • I have money in savings and a balanced plan for security and income growth.
  • I see people, not as they are, but rather for what they can be.
  • I am a strong, motivated and extremely dedicated leader.
  • I am a great leader and achieve my victories through the victories of those I serve.
  • I choose to spend my time with positive and forward thinking life affirming people.
  • I am persistent in the pursuit of my goals.
  • Solutions and alternative ideas come easy for me.
  • I take time each day to play and to enjoy my family.
  • I am an excellent role model for others.
  • I forget the mistakes of the past and press on to my greatest achievement.
"What a man thinks of himself that is what determines, or rather indicates his fate."
"I have learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
-Henry David Thoreau

How to Stick to Your Goals When the Obstacles Seem Impossible

Overcoming the Impossible
Almost everyone knows the value of setting goals. Setting them, writing them down, and then marching toward their completion is the best and surest way to make progress. It doesn't matter what your goals are, as long as they're important to you, and let's face it, if they weren't important to you, you wouldn't have made them goals in the first place, right?
Problems arise, however, when you feel as though you're not making any progress. Sometimes it feels as though every force in the universe is acting against you, trying to keep you from achieving whatever goal you have set for yourself. It can be discouraging. It can make you want to just throw you hands up in despair and give up.
Before you do that though, take a step back. Take a deep breath and assess what's really going on here. In almost every case, there's something you could do just a bit differently that will turn the tide back in your favor and make you feel as though you're making genuine progress again. Here are five simple tricks for doing just that, and overcoming seeming impossible odds:
1- Don't Do Too Much
Most people think they're good multitaskers, but science has shown that less than two percent of the population can actually pull it off effectively.
Even if you're convinced you're one of those 2%, don't do it. You will overwhelm yourself and add to the frustration if you set too many goals and try to pursue them all at once.
Instead, pick a single goal. Your most pressing and important one, and focus exclusively on that. Knock it down, and then proceed to your next goal.
The focus will help ensure that you see more progress, more quickly toward your main goal, and that will build momentum and the confidence you need to keep fighting the good fight until all your goals have been achieved (at which point, it's time to set some new goals!)
2- Take Time Management To The Next Level
Have you ever performed a time study on yourself? You should! It's shocking how much slack time there is in most people's day. You might find that you spend two or three hours a day checking email, or browsing Facebook, or watching YouTube videos.
It's different for every person of course, but everyone has time sinks in their day. Identify yours and cut them out. This gives you more time to focus on your goals.
3- The Importance of Down Time
You'll get burnt out if you spend all your time chasing your goals without a break, so be sure to give yourself one. Every day, take a minimum of thirty minutes a day, just for yourself. Meditate, listen to music, go for a walk... do anything except think about your goals.
Of course, while you're doing this, your subconscious mind is still hard at work thinking about them, and this is what often leads people to sudden flashes of insight or inspiration.
That's why the downtime is so important. Not only does it help you preserve your sanity, but it gives your mind the space and time it needs to look at whatever problems you're encountering from a different angle.
4- Don't Obsess Over Perfection
A lot of people get the idea stuck in their head that their first try at a given thing has to be sheer perfection. They obsess over it.
They spend way more time than they need to, trying to make sure that this one little piece of the puzzle is absolutely perfect before moving onto the next task in pursuit of their goal.
Don't do that. It doesn't have to be perfect at first, it just has to exist.
Once it exists, you can spend some additional time each day tweaking it and making it better, but don't feel as though you must make everything absolutely perfect before you can move on. You don't, and if you get locked into that kind of thinking, you'll never actually get anywhere.
Get the basics up and running and move on. As you make progress toward your goal, you can circle back to improve what you've already got, but don't spend too much time obsessing over the small stuff.
5- Go Granular
One of the leading causes of frustration when you're chasing a particular goal is the feeling of a lack of progress toward your goal. It's just too big, and there are always things cropping up that seem to get between you and what you really want.
Focusing on a single goal, as mentioned above, will help you steer around a number of roadblocks that seem to throw themselves in your way, but that won't matter if you never feel like you're actually making forward progress. Fortunately, there's an easy fix for that.
Yes, your main goal is important, but equally important are all the sub-tasks involved in ultimately achieving that goal. Break it down into small, manageable chunks.
Specific tasks you can start and complete on the same day that aren't your goal, in and of themselves, but move you steadily closer to it.
Doing that will give you a feeling of momentum. Each day, you'll be able to chart the course of your progress, and you'll see yourself moving closer and closer to the goal you're ultimately hoping to achieve.
Call it what you like: List making, going granular, or eating the elephant one bite at a time, it all comes down to the same thing. If you try to tackle a huge goal all at once, you're almost doomed to fail. It's just too big to handle. It's just too big to get your arms around all at once.
On the other hand, if you break it down into tiny steps and individual components, you'll find yourself racing ahead, making steady progress, and before you know it, your goal has been achieved! That's how you manage all of the obstacles and road blocks that might arise to try and keep you from your goal.

10 Benefits of Knowing Your Purpose

"To love what you do and feel that it matters-how could anything be more fun?" ~ Katharine Graham

What is so important about having a purpose in life? Increasingly, people are looking for something more than just "making a living." They're realizing that there seems to be something missing in their lives and they're experiencing an inner sense of dissatisfaction. Many outwardly successful people describe feeling "off-track" in some way or a sense of being incomplete. That missing something is a sense of purpose.
Without purpose, we may drift through directionless and unfulfilled. According to business psychologist and psychotherapist Douglas La Bier, "The consequences of not finding your purpose include chronic, lingering dissatisfaction; an absence of inner peace and a sense of not being fully in sync with your inner self."
Here are some of the benefits of connecting with and pursuing your purpose:
1. It gives you control over your own direction in life. You stop following the "shoulds" of family and society and set your own course for what you want to do with your life.
2. You're more likely to have a healthier outlook on life and be more resistant to stress.
3. You have more focus in life, making choices based on what's meaningful to you.
4. You have a greater sense of inner peace and satisfaction as you align with what you were "made for."
5. You live more in the flow of life, rather than in struggle. This isn't to say there aren't challenges but when you have a sense of meaning and purpose the challenges don't seem as large and you get through them more quickly and easily. You're better able to handle the ups and downs of life. *
6. You enjoy more satisfying relationships. A 2009 study of over 1,000 adults found that those with a high sense of meaning in their lives spent more time and attention on their loved ones and communities. They were more engaged with their families, neighbors and colleagues.
7. It redefines what success means to you. It's not about climbing the corporate ladder, a particular title or how much money you make. This isn't to say you can't make good money. When you're doing what you love you are actually more aligned to everything you want, including financial abundance. It simply means that the usual markers of success in our society are not as important as the inner satisfaction of how you're spending your time. Success is defined by what brings you joy.
8. You'll love knowing what you're doing is making a contribution to the larger whole. When you're "on purpose" you'll be doing what you love and utilizing your talents in a way that adds more positive energy to the world. Serving more than your own self-interest connects you to your higher self. It opens your heart and summons your spirit.
9. Your overall happiness increases and you have more of a zest for life!
10. Having a sense of purpose can help you live longer! **
If you've connected with your purpose, congratulations! You're already reaping the rewards of "doing what you love and feeling that it matters." Whatever it is that you've found, if it is your passion and has meaning for you, it does matter.
If you're still wondering what your purpose is, I encourage you to explore the possibilities. What do you love to do? What talents and skills do you enjoy using? You may want to enlist the help of a coach to go deeper. The world is waiting for your unique gifts!
